The West Studio is working with a|r|c Architects on the phase one of the Master Plan for the heavily wooded 20-acre site proposed for the new Elders Center for The Chehalis Tribe. Community facilitation with the tribe's elders was an essential part of the design process to garner consensus on project direction.
The design team providing a master plan for the site, locating the proposed elders center, future elders housing, and tribal administration center using the existing significant trees to inform placement and create natural gateways. The design for the Elders Center creates a private woodland oasis for the tribe's elders. Planned amenities include: a variety of spaces with areas for small group gathering, a small accessible loop trail with opportunities to pause and rest, accessible gardening space and sun plaza, opportunities for berry picking and foraging for traditional medicinal plants, an indoor/outdoor fire place for small group gatherings, and a screened sunroom for outdoor dining. Rain gardens are seamlessly integrated into the design to treat and infiltrate stormwater on site.
